Product Review – Jingle the Husky Pup.

jingle

I recently saw a commercial on TV from Hallmark for their new interactive story buddy, Jingle the Husky pup. According to Hallmark, you read the included story with Jingle and he responds. I have a 2 year old little boy who just adores puppies and this was a must buy for us! As soon as they were release for sale I purchased one. These puppies do not run cheap. They run around $30.00 for puppy and book. But, I could not pass it up.

Once I returned home with the puppy, I read the instructions carefully. We were all set and ready for our story time with Jingle.

Instructions stated that the room must be completely quiet and free from noise. Really? Is this even possible? But, after reading the story, I understood that this was a major instruction to follow. Jingle will respond to certain words or phrases that are in the book and if he can not pick up on them he will not respond. Also, while reading the book you must speak clearly and loudly. Not so loud that you are yelling, but not so quiet that it is too soft for him to hear. But, worked wonderfully!

Once we figured it out, we enjoyed our story time with Jingle. The boys laughed and cheered along as our husky pup barked and howled along with the book. After seeing their faces, I knew the price for this was well worth it. They even brought Jingle into their bed at night.

Jingle the Husky pup also starred in his very own TV show on the Hallmark Channel. Just like the book, your pup can follow along at home. We set our Jingle in front of the TV and turned him on. He barked and howled along with the TV as well. This was a fun surprise for the boys as they didn’t know our Jingle would interact with the TV as well. The movie was 30min long and stayed true to the book only adding a few little details.

On top of the book and TV show, there is a free iPad app that has games, music, and even your own interactive book that you can record your voice to and read along with Jingle. We had a blast recording our voices to the story and having the book come to life.

There are now new books and more stories available for Jingle for more adventures with your Husky pup available at Hallmark.com.

Jingle made such an impact with my boys that they insisted he be included in our holiday family photo. A wonderful new holiday tradition that is a must buy!

Sight-Words-DVD-Rock-N-Learn

This Holiday why not give the gift of Reading?  I love giving books for the Holidays, so naturally I love the idea of a sight words DVD as a gift.  Not just any sight words DVD, but a Rock N Learn Sight Words DVD.  This DVD is filled with fun music and entertaining practice that children will enjoy over and over again.  Our children testers 3, and 6 enjoy singing and dancing to the songs while they learn.  Most of us learned our alphabet using song; this technique has been proven effective time and time again.  I personally take pleasure in hearing my children sing the songs and try to beat the word machine.

My three-year-old son is taking the Rock N Learn DVD seriously he wants to be like his older sisters.  My kindergartener enjoys the extra practice here at home and of course the game for her is beating the characters to the word.

Now your child has the chance to do the same.  Rock N Learn is giving away 2 Rock N Learn Sight Words DVD to two lucky readers.  Rock N Learn is also offering 25% off your order at the Rock N Learn website using the code JQ7711

Featured Holiday Product: Little People® Zootalkers™ Animal Sounds Zoo

fpzoo

LITTLE PEOPLE® ZOOTALKERS™ Animal Sounds Zoo is a great gift for your little zookeeper.  We were able to test this product out and had so much fun doing so.  You do have to do some light setup before your little one can get down to animal business, but it was a “snap”, literally.  All the pieces that you have to assemble simply snap (or click) in place.  We just followed the picture on the box and was able to have it all in one piece in a matter of a couple minutes.  It does require 3AA batteries so you might want a small screwdriver handy but no other tools for that matter were needed for this quick assembly.  We had our little testers get down to business and they stayed occupied for quite some time.  We left the toy out for a few days to see if it would lose it luster if the kids saw it every day, but no such luck, this toy was honestly, played with every day.   It comes with a ‘zookeeper’, lion, polar bear,  and ape.  I’m not exactly sure why it was an ape when it is clear on the box that a monkey is on the swing, unless it is just to show that other animals can be purchased and are compatible with this particular animal sounds zoo.  Just be prepared, if you’re expecting a monkey, you might end up with an ape.

The kids can place the animals in the den to hear it’s name and sound it makes.  They can slide the animals down the slide, swing them in the tree and play with the hippo that makes water splashing noises or the animals can just hang out in the trees.  Moms can move it easily because it does have a nice handle masked as part of the icy area the polar bear can hang out in.  It is best for kids 18mo+ and up and by up, I mean, we had even had a 7 year old playing with it!  The Little People® Zootalkers™ Animal Sounds Zoo happily receives a spot on our Holiday featured gift list.  It has a MSRP of $40 and you can pick yours up at Target, Walmart, and by going directly to the Mattel website.  We are sure your little one will have fun playing with all the animals this Christmas and for days beyond.

Does your preschooler journal?

notebook

Is that possible?  Yes, of course it is and it is so much fun for your child and for you too.  Having your child journal builds a love or writing, drawing, as well as communication.  The journal doesn’t have to be fancy just a plan old spiral will do, have your child draw on the cover and make it his own.  To start off the journal you may have your child draw a picture of his or herself, and  write their name.  If your child doesn’t write yet he can still journal through you.

Have your child draw and you write, this will help in the future if you aren’t sure what the picture was.  Your child will love looking at the pictures and reading what they were thinking at that age.

Some prompts you may use:

  • What did you do today
  • What was your favorite part of the day
  • What is your favorite food
  • Colors are fun if you are working on colors you may have your child write/draw their favorite red item.
  • Letters may also be fun “My favorite A thing”
  • We went for a walk today this is what I saw.
  • Have your child take a tally of red cars, blue cars, or silver cars or pumpkins and scarecrows and see what there    were more of.
  • Who I love and who loves me.
  • When I grow up
  • Today we read ” The cat in the hat”  my favorite part was….

My Favorite Giant

My-Favorite-Giant-Cover

A while back we had the opportunity to attend the extremely popular Wizard World Comic Con here in Chicago. It was our first experience, and let’s just say it was quite the experience!  We were so thrilled to be a part of the action and now we can see why fans love this event. While we were there, we had the pleasure of meeting Peter Mayhew. Some (non-Comic Con goers) won’t recognize that name, but perhaps you are familiar with famous Star Wars character, Chewbacca? If you loved Star Wars, and who didn’t, then it would be safe to say that, Peter was your favorite giant growing up! I mean, who didn’t love Chewbacca, right?

Peter was sharing his book, My Favorite Giant with his fans while at Comic Con and we were able to receive a copy to read and share our thoughts with you, our readers. His book is a very easy read for children. It shares a story of how everyone is different, yet we are all the same in the ways that it matters most, once you get to know us as an individual. It is told by the very shy, 7’3″ Mayhew as he encountered some unpleasant situations while growing up.  The story is beautifully illustrated by the very talented, Terry Naughton (Walt Disney Animation Studios, think the Beast from Beauty and the Beast among other popular characters), and allows the young reader to visualize the message behind the story.

There is another beautiful story inside this story.  It is about a little girl Katie who lost her battle with cancer in 2005 however, the R2-KT lives on and its mission is to entertain sick children, raise awareness of pediatric cancer, and raise money for such charities as Make-A-Wish and Children’s Cancer Fund.

We hope you will take a peek at this book as it is sure to open the lines of communication between you and your child.  We live in a time when it is easier to be mean to someone than to get to know them, and that behavior needs to stop.  As quoted by Peter Mayhew, “kindness replaces meanness“, lets make that a saying kids can remember…forever.

A Teacher with too much time on her hands?

discipline in school

I shared this question on Facebook today and I’d love for you to share and chime in with your thoughts.

Your child’s teacher sends notices home for you to sign as a warning to your child for his/her unacceptable behavior. You receive them for reasons, you as the parent do not feel are punishable. Do you discipline our child even though you think the teacher is being nit-picky?

The school has a warning system in place for unacceptable behavior. They each have a ‘card’. Their card starts on green. When a child does something the teacher feels is inappropriate, she will ask the child to move his/her card to the next color level. The next level is yellow, followed by orange and finally, red. We are specifically speaking of 2nd graders within this example, so figure on average, a 7 year old. Teacher discovers your child drew a little drawing on his homework paper, nothing bad, just some stairs and a guy climbing the stairs, or your daughter is walking to the lunch room and her lunch box isn’t at her side. Suddenly, your child has come home with a “yellow” paper that requires your signature. When you ask your child about the warning system, you find out that in first grade, their teacher gave them three strikes and if you reached that third strike, you moved your card to yellow. Then it was felt by the teacher that you should be aware of what he/she was doing. Not bad, you can deal with that. However, in second grade, this particular teacher is sending kids home with yellow slips of paper, left and right…for reasons that just seem ridiculous to the average parent. Leaving them outraged and confused. Perhaps thinking, my child has never come home with a yellow slip, and now he/she has come home with two or three… or more, for reasons that are just absurd.

How can you as the parent, reprimand your child for the normal way they walk? I could see if they posed a threat to another student or was harming them in any way, but for walking without your lunch box immediately at their side…or a drawing on the back of their homework paper, these are things our children have to worry about at 7 years old? This is coming from the same school that cut a very important reading program, and is billion dollars in debt! We are focused on how children walk, instead of how they learn? I’m getting derailed here, so back on track…

Would you discipline your child as a result of the yellow slip, even if you do not believe it is a justifiable cause for discipline? Would you speak to the teacher, the principal, the school board…how far would you take it if you kept receiving these yellow pieces of paper (that have now become more of an annoyance than anything else).
