Winter Family Fun

183

After the horrific winter we had in 2011, I can’t believe these words are about to leave my mouth, but here goes:  I think winter is my new favorite season.  This past January, we took our first winter vacation with our 2 ½ yr old little boy, Eddie.  When we were searching for our vacation, we knew we wanted a resort that was centered around activities that the entire family could do.  We found everything we were looking for, and more, at Rocking Horse Ranch.

My idea of a great winter vacation has always involved getting away from the cold weather and going somewhere warm and tropical.  It also usually included me being served cocktails poolside.  Now that I have a child, I am always on the search for getaways that we will both enjoy.

My husband and I stumbled upon Rocking Horse Ranch this summer and had an absolute blast.  The pool and hiking trails were amazing and the service and attention to detail that the resort provides to their guests are unparalleled.

We were invited to return to experience everything Rocking Horse Ranch’s “Winter Fun Park” had to offer.

CONVENIENCE

Rocking Horse ranch is located in Hyland, NY less than 90 minutes from New York City. The fact that it is so centrally located to the City makes the entire experience less stressful.  You can pack the car and in no time at all, you are at the Resort, enjoying all of its fabulous amenities.

One of the nicest things about Rocking Horse Ranch is that you can get there as early as you’d like and they allow you to start enjoying the facilities as soon as you arrive.  A locker room is available before you check in so your family can get into the pool even before your room is ready.

Everything is included and everything is at your fingertips.  All of the amenities, including snow tubing, skiing, ice skating, bounce houses – you name it, they have it and it is all within walking distance from your cozy room.  No more pulling the little ones in and out of the car!

WINTER FUN PARK

When we arrived we checked into our room and went straight to the winter fun park.

We decided to try the snow tubes first.  We made a great choice because they were fantastic!  My son Eddie and I got right into a double tube.  My husband raced us down in a single tube.  Eddie was thrilled and kept saying “Again! Again!”  My husband and I laughed like we were kids again – it was great.  And the best part for us “older” folks is that we didn’t even have to walk up the hill because there is a tow rope that pulls you to the top of the mountain.

For the adventurous types, nighttime tubing is available from 6:30 to 9:30pm. If snow tubing under the stars followed by roasting marshmallows over an open campfire is your idea of a good time, then Rocking Horse Ranch is the place for your family.

After our snow tubing adventure we decided to try skiing.  The last time I skied was 15 years ago.  This was the perfect place for me to get back up on skis, and to get Eddie up on skis for the first time.   I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that the ski boots, skis, and even lessons were included.  Rocking Horse Ranch has amazing instructors who helped us every step of the way.

Sal and Steven were our instructors for the day, and they were a perfect match for my family. They were incredibly patient and kind and took their time with us.  They took my son to the top of the hill and we watched proudly as he skied down the hill with them. It was amazing how much they taught him in an afternoon.

Although I love to ski, I was hesitant to bring my son skiing because I wasn’t sure how we would be able to manage getting him from the hotel to the ski rental location, then to the ski lift, and then back again.  But at Rocking Horse, the mountain is just steps away from the room.  We were able to be fitted for our boots and skis in minutes, and the ease of everything really made our first time skiing with a toddler very manageable and we were able to thoroughly enjoy our time on the mountain.

INDOOR WATER PARK

After all of our fun snow adventures, we decided to go back inside and put our bathing suits on and head to the indoor water park.  Rocking Horse Ranch has an amazing indoor water park that is always 85 degrees and so much fun.  There are two levels to the water park: the lower level has a huge pool with dumping buckets and challenging floating tiles to try to walk across.  The upper level has three slides and geysers – my son was so enthralled with this level of the water park that we could have easily spent our entire vacation there.

The main attraction for the bigger kids and kids at heart (my husband and myself included) is an enclosed water slide that begins on the second level of the water park.  It’s an adrenaline rush ride, as it shoots the rider through a tube that runs outside and around the resort, and then shoots you back inside and deposits you into the 85 degree pool.

For the younger kids there is a kiddy area and the water is only about 1 foot deep which gives toddlers the freedom to explore and feel independent.

The pool area has plenty of lounge chairs and tables so when you need a break there’s plenty of places to relax, sit back and enjoy.  There were also more than enough clean towels and life preservers to go around.

SAFETY

One of the most notable things for me about Rocking Horse Ranch is the feeling of safety and security that I have when I am there with my family.

As a child abuse prosecutor, I am always concerned about the safety of children, especially that of my own child.  And when choosing a vacation destination, that concern is often a determining factor in my decision as to where we will travel.

Steve Turk, the owner of Rocking Horse Ranch spares no expense when it comes to safety and holds his staff to the highest standard.   The lifeguards are trained using the “Ellis” system. This is the highest certification in water park and amusement park industries and is the one that Disney resorts require.

All of the lifeguards follow strict guidelines including continuously scanning water, constant supervision of children and staff.  It makes me feel comfortable to know that there is heavy staffing to ensure enough “eyes” are on the little ones at all times.

Rocking Horse ranch really does cater to children.  In addition to the Winter Fun Park, Water Park and animals, there are two playgrounds: an outdoor playground and the indoor “Fun Barn”.  The fun barn has a giant bounce castle and a two story ball pit for the kids.  It also has rock climbing and ping pong for the bigger kids.  There is always something to do and the kids are never bored.  They also have a game room and a Wii room.

FURRY FRIENDS

Aside from the skiing, the snow tubing and the water park, Rocking Horse Ranch is a fully functioning ranch.  They have beautiful horses and you can do up to three horseback rides per day.  The horses are so calm and they take excellent care of their animals.  There are rides for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

For toddlers they have a retired horse names Casino that provides pony rides for the kids all day long.  My son loved Casino so much that we had to buy a toy horse which, of course, he promptly named Casino.

My son is an animal lover and this was therefore the perfect place for him.  Not only do they have over 100 horses but they have a Camel named Chip, two donkeys, two hairy cows and a Zebra named Zoe.  We spent so much time just visiting the animals.  One of the ranchers named Tabo, saw my son and remembered him from our summer trip.  He brought treats out for the animals and allowed my son to feed them to the animals.  Eddie was overjoyed and to this day still talks about the animals he bonded with there.

ACCOMODATIONS:

After the whole bedbug epidemic I became hesitant to travel, so when I go to a new hotel, the first thing I do is inspect for cleanliness.  Like every other aspect of Rocking Horse Ranch, the standards are set high by Steve Turk and those standards are surpassed by him and his staff.

The grounds and common areas are immaculate and it seems like someone is always cleaning up.  The rooms are spotless.  The décor is western and the bedspreads and blankets are washed and changed with every new guest.  My research has shown that not many hotels do that.   My family stayed in a “Double A” room which featured two queens size beds and a bunk bed.  The bathroom has a full tub and there is another vanity outside the bathroom, which makes it easier for multiple people to get ready at the same time.  The rooms also come equipped with cable and free WI-Fi.

FOOD

The only bad thing I can say about Rocking Horse Ranch is that I usually gain a few pounds when I go because the food is so good and I can’t resist the temptation!  All of the food is included and the meals are fabulous.

Hands down, breakfast is my favorite meal at Rocking Horse Ranch.  They offer a huge buffet with bacon, sausage, pancakes and the best french toast I have ever tasted.  The trimmings are impressive, from the sweet maple syrup down to the cinnamon butter that melts in your mouth.

If you can’t find anything that suits your fancy at the buffet, the chef will make eggs and omelets to order.  If you don’t want to gain a few pounds like I did, you can have the delicious oatmeal or the farm fresh fruit that they get from local farms in the area.

Lunch is Eddie’s favorite meal because it is a full on character lunch with a horse and a sheriff.  Eddie can hardly contain himself and he eats all of his lunch because he wants to show the Sheriff how well he eats.  Whatever works!  Lunch is also a buffet and they have the best salad bar on earth – everything is incredibly fresh.

In my opinion, dinner at Rocking Horse Ranch is better than any meal I’ve had in the tri-state area.  Dinner is a sit down meal with so many choices.  I had a delicious steak with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.  Dessert was succulent and they even have a chocolate fountain and ice cream bar.  At dinner, you are seated at tables with other vacationing families and we have even made some new friends at Rocking Horse Ranch!

After dinner the Ranch offers nightly entertainment which is always very creative and is fun for the whole family.  Before the show they have a DJ and all of the kids and adults have a dance party. The people that don’t want to dance have just as much fun watching all of the kids get jiggy with it.

For in between meals, they even have snacks.  On our second day there, my wonderful husband stayed in our room with our son while he was napping.  I planned on going down to the spa to sit in the sauna, but I was immediately side tracked when I saw the chef’s tastings, which included all types of cheeses, dips and even a pasta station.  I sat down with a glass of wine, which was on the house, and had a nice conversation by the fireplace with another mom.  It was so nice to sit in front of the fireplace and relax.

CHILD CARE

As a full time working mother, it is important to us as a family to spend quality time together and be able to relax and enjoy ourselves at the same time.  For parents who want a little alone time, Rocking Horse has Fort Tiny, which is the child care center.  They have a great play space which is loaded with entertaining toys and books.  The teachers are certified, and they are wonderful.  They even do arts and crafts with the children.

Fort Tiny is the perfect option for parents who want an hour or two alone to horseback ride or ski together (or nap!) but the child is not ready or able to.  At Fort Tiny, parents are able to drop their child and have the comfort of knowing they are in good hands.

Rocking Hose Ranch is a place that generations of families before mine have enjoyed and made a part of their family “story.”  I am looking forward to going back year after year as our family grows.

99 Problems but the B Word ain’t one!

Hova

First off congratulations to Jay-Z and Beyonce on the birth of their daughter Blue Ivy.  Jay-Z marked the birth by releasing a new song entitled “Glory“,  which is a tribute to his daughter.  Jay-Z has been known to use some harsh lyrics in the past, and making many upset with his lyrics especially feminist groups.  Why, because he uses the word B*tch {99 Problems but a B– ain’t one}. However, with the birth of his daughter his tune has changed:

Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich,
I didn’t think hard about using the word B—-.
I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it
now with my daughter in this world
I curse those that give it.
I never realized while on the fast track
that I’d give riddance to the word b—, to leave her innocence in tact.
No man will degrade her, or call her out her name
the women won’t despise her and call her the same.
-Jay-z
What do you think of Jay-Z’s change?  Did you listen to Glory… I have to say I like to hear a softer side of Hova.

Beaches Turks and Caicos- Five Star Family Fun!!!

040

Being a first time mommy and going back to work I could not wait for my first family vacation with my child.  Every morning my 2 year old son and I would watch an episode of Sesame Street before we start our day.  Before each show I would see as commercial for Beaches family resort.  The commercial shows a mom happily drinking a mimosa at breakfast with her husband and the child looks even happier, as the family frolic on the beach together.  Inevitably, I would look at the clock and realize I am going to be late for work.  Each morning I would imagine myself in this commercial.  Finally one day I went on the website and decided that would be me.

After extensive research into other vacation options we decided to book at Beaches Turks and Caicos all inclusive family resort.  This place truly is heaven on earth.

Location:

One of the main reasons we chose Turks and Caicos is because of its location.  Turks and Caicos is a 3 ½  hour flight from New York I thought that would be important since it was my child’s first trip on an airplane. The trip from the airport to the resort is only 15 minutes.  That is so important. Most resorts take almost 2 hours to get to there from the airport.  NOT FUN WITH A TODDLER!!!!!

I also appreciated the fact that a member of the beaches staff would greet us at the airport and bring us to the resort. The short trip to the resort was a breeze and by the time we got to paradise my son was still happy and ready to take on the trip.

Service:

We were greeted by Keisha Gordan, who made sure we had the vacation of a lifetime.     As an aside, we were originally supposed to travel in August but due to Hurricane Irene we had to postpone our trip.  Keisha knew rescheduling caused some difficulties for us, so she upgraded us to a suite in the Italian Village.  This place was amazing.  We checked into our room, which had a separate bedroom with bunk beds and an Xbox for kids We overlooked the beautiful pool and the ocean, which was a perfect way to start our day.

Jason the Concierge in the Italian Village treated us like family and more importantly went out of his way to make my son happy.   The first morning we were there, we woke up to two chairs by the zero entry pool with a towel made into an animal by Jason.  When Jason realized that my son liked dinosaurs, he went out of his way to make sure that the next day there was a dinosaur towel waiting for us on our beach chairs.  Keisha and Jason are truly the reason we will be booking next year.

Sesame Street:

The Beaches resorts are the proud sponsor of Sesame Street so the resort is Sesame street world.  If you child has any interest in Sesame Street, this is the place for you.  The camp for infants and toddlers is called Camp Sesame.  And that it was.  Every day they had an itinerary of events that would occupy the children.  You could bring you child there for the entire day or you could drop in for one of the many activities.  Each day they had a letter of the day with a character.  Throughout day, the kids would interact with at least three of the sesame street characters.  This was the best part of the trip for my son.  He would beam with excitement every time he was near one of his Sesame Street friends.  He would call out to them and run over and they would turn around and give him a big hug.  He still wakes up and says, “Let’s go see big bird”.  Every night they have a live Sesame Street show or Parade.  It was like going to see Sesame Street Live every night.

All of the characters have a handler that walk around with them and they are amazing.  They help facilitate the show and activities that the character participates in.  My son baked cookies with Cookie Monster and read a story with Elmo. Guirline, one the handlers, in particular was the best.  Each and every time she saw my son; she remembered his name and made him feel so happy.

For the time when my husband and I wanted to private time or to go off on an adventure as a couple, we left our son at Camp Sesame.  All of the camps and group activities for the kids are included in the price but if you want more one on one care for your child they have ultra certified nannies.  Being a child abuse prosecutor, I was skeptical about leaving my son anywhere out of my sight.  So I did my own investigation.  I talked to the director of the camp and learned that all of the rooms are recorded, so there is constant accountability.  I watched how the counselors interacted with the children.  One of the biggest factors for me were all of the parents that I talked to who have been to the resort over three times, continue to use the camp and each year the counselors remain the same.

The Pools:

There are at least 6 different pools.  The pool in the Italian village had a zero entry section, which is great for small children to walk in on their own and develop a sense of confidence in the water.  Each day my son ventured a little further in the water, by the end of the trip he was jumping in.  All of the pools have a swim up bar and my husband and I enjoyed a frozen cocktail while the bartender made my son a frozen chocolate milk.

They also have a water park, which had a lazy river, 4 water slides and an entire section devoted to toddlers.  The swim up bar in the water park even served ice cream and milk shakes.

The Beach:

The Beach at the resort is the best beach I have ever been to in the Caribbean (and I have been to a lot).  The sand is white powder that extends all the way into the ocean.  I could not find a rock or a piece of seaweed the whole trip.  The water was the most beautiful shade of blue that I have ever seen.  When you were looking that the ocean you wanted to jump in and when you were in, you didn’t want to get out.

The other thing that I thought was amazing was there were spots in the water that you could snorkel right off the beach.  For us that was fantastic.  When you have a child you may not want to commit to a 3 hour snorkeling tour when your child is on land.  This gave us the option to snorkel but feel that if we needed to be with our child we had that option.

I finally gave in and hired a babysitter during naptime.  I hired her for two hours and asked her to stroll my son around the property.  She was great.  I learned that she is a doctor in her home country and she was so nurturing with my son.  The best part of the camp or the babysitting is that they give you a cell phone and you can stay in constant contact with them (if you desired).  I, being the nervous mom, took the cell phone.  Those two hours have my husband and I an opportunity to do some of that off shore snorkeling.  The fish were amazing.  While I was in the water, I realized I would not be able to hear the cell phone, so I swam back to shore and asked the lifeguard to signal to me if the phone went off.  He was happy to help.  The phone never rang and my husband and I got to enjoy our time worry free.

The Food:

The restaurants were five star.  We went to Barefoot on the Beach which is a restaurant steps from the beach.  It even has small tables for children.  My husband and I ordered a filet Mignon.  I have eaten at many New York steak houses and this steak was cooked to perfection. We loved it so much my husband and I ordered another one to share.  The service was great, Unojay, took great care of us and we can’t wait to go back.  The attention to service and friendliness of the staff make it so enjoyable.

Most mornings we ate at Mario’s. This was a great restaurant that had a buffet breakfast.  The food was fabulous.  The service was even better.  They go out of their way for you and make each child feel equally important.  This restaurant was my son’s favorite because they had a section called Bambino’s, where the tables were kid size and they had beautiful statues of the Sesame gang.  The beauty of this was that my husband and I could enjoy our breakfast and sip our mimosas, while my son was happy to finish his breakfast so he could walk around and say good morning to all of the statues.  Our servers, Emeliano and Junel went out of there was to make each meal a happy one.  Junel came over to my som every few minutes to give him a high five when he ate like a “big boy”.

We also ate at Gordon’s, a pizza, Panini and hot dog place.  It was great, you could go there and sit and have you meal with a glass of wine or you could pack it up and take it to the beach or pool with you.  My son loved the cheese pizza and my husband and I splurged with prosciutto and ricotta pizza with a glass of chilled chardonnay.

The bottom line is that this place has something for everyone, especially children.  The reason I find this place a cut above the rest is that you really do get the best of all worlds.  Kids are busy and happy and catered too but you don’t feel like the place is over run with kids.  You are pampered just as much as the kids.

Every morning we now watch the Beaches commercial and remember our vacation and my son yells out “Vacation! Vacation!” See you next year Beaches!!!

Adults, Children, Airplaines, What would you do?

Since the recent postings of the French actor, Gerard Depardieu relieving himself in the cabin of an airplane, it reminded me of an incident I experienced in October 2010.  Obviously the actor went one above what we did, and while I find it rather nasty, it leads me to say, when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go!  You can only hold it for so long…right?

On a recent Southwest Air flight home from Orlando, I encountered a situation that I never thought I’d have to encounter…but with a child, it should have been expected, right?  It was the “Mommy, I have to go potty” moment that happens when you don’t really want it to happen, oh say, miles in the air on a plane!  The pilot just made his announcement that he was turning the “seat belt” light on and we were going to be starting our descend to Chicago.  Just as that was happening, Gianna tells me, “Mommy, I have to go to the bathroom”…and I ask the normal question, “Can you hold it a little bit until we land?”.  She tells me, “No, I have to go really bad”…oh great I think…now what?  I wasn’t quite sure what to do so I pushed my call button for the flight attendant.  She came over in a little huff and I asked the following question, “Do we have time for her to go to the bathroom really quick” as I pointed over to my 6 year old holding herself down there practically doing the seated potty dance.  She looks at me and says in a quite frank manner, “No, I am actually supposed to be buckled in my seat right now” and leaves me to figure this one out on my own.  My mom timed the entire process from when the flight attendant came over to when I finally had enough…and it was…28 minutes!  My 6 year old daughter sat there, in tears, holding her urine as best as she could and kept saying, “I just want to go potty” in between tearful gasps.  I tried to explain to her why she couldn’t go, but she just wasn’t understanding.  I told her her only option was to pee right there in the seat to which she was having no part of…why?  Because then everyone would “think I am a baby”.  So instead, she tried her best to hold it.  As soon as our plane touched the ground and came to a stop the pilot told us that we would be in a holding pattern because our terminal was not free.  We’d have to wait another 5 minutes or so until the other plane proceeded to the runway.

Now, there was NO way I was going to let my daughter hold it and cry with such discomfort any longer.  I handed her to my husband and told him, “Take her to the bathroom in the back” only because it was the closer of the two bathrooms.  Once he got there, he was greeted by the flight attendant who promptly told him he wasn’t supposed to be back there.  He basically told her he didn’t care that his daughter was crying in pain to go to the bathroom and everyone would just have to wait one minute longer to get to the terminal until she was done.  Apparently, the flight attendant didn’t like that and made a call to the pilot, who in turn, made a not so nice announcement that we could not proceed to the terminal until “EVERYONE was in their seats”.  Fine…we are all good in my row, I now have a happy and RELIEVED child, so all was good.  Just then, the pilot gets back on his intercom and in a very mean and nasty tone says, “I am SURE that YOUR fellow passengers would like to get off this plane but we cannot move until EVERYONE IS SEATED, SO GET IN YOUR SEATS!”.  Just then, we all look at each other like, WTF was that all about, and I just happen to turn my head and see that another little girl walked out of the bathroom and went into her seat.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand that there are rules and regulations, security issues and procedures, however, I do also know that SOME rules are made to be broken, especially when there are children involved.  It wasn’t like it was an adult who pretty much knows HOW to “hold it”, we are talking about small children who just don’t understand the “how’s” or “why’s” of it all.  They just know that they have to relieve themselves.  I was very offended and disappointed in the way that the entire staff behaved.  I have traveled Southwest Air my entire adult life and not once have I ever had a bad experience, until now.  It seriously makes me question if I will use them again and it really has left a bad feeling with my daughter who told me she didn’t want to fly anymore.  Can you imagine being 6 years old, having to go to the bathroom and being told to “HOLD IT” for 30+ minutes?  That is insane.  Would the airlines rather I let my child go to the bathroom all over their seat…and floor?  I am sure there is such a thing as a “sanitary” issue with that.  Which is worse, staying parked for one minute or sitting in a seat that just had urine all over it?  You decide!  I’d rather wait the extra minute!

My question is to all you parents with children…what would you do in that type of situation?  Would you continue to make your child “hold it”, have them go on the seat right there and have the staff clean up after you, or would you take them to the bathroom on your own?  I don’t think we were wrong whatsoever in taking her to the bathroom when we did, and I can’t blame that other little girl for going to the bathroom when she did either…goodness, making them little ones hold it for 30+ minutes is just insane and inhumane!

Summer Fun

reading

WOW! I can’t believe that April is already here. This year is just flying by. If you are anything like me, you have already started planning activities for your children for the summer. Need to keep them busy right? I know I have been a bit MIA from here this week, so I have a ton of ideas floating around. This week I have been researching things for my oldest son to do this summer to keep him busy and not going stir crazy stuck in the house. If you live in a state where in the middle of the summer temps can reach around 101 on a cool day like I do, indoor activities are a must. But, we were wanting fun yet educational activities to challenge his young mind.

So, after some internet surfing I found a few activities that are completely different and fun and educational, somewhat at least.

My favorite is Animal Adventure Summer Camp at the Zoo. During June, July, and early August, the Dallas Zoo will offer single day and week-long summer camps for children entering PreK through 8th grade. Majority of Zoos offer similar type camps. You can check out your local zoo for complete information on the programs they offer.  The Dallas Zoo offers single day camps that teach young children all about Lions and Tigers to Primates and Birds as well as offering Week long camps designed for certain age groups.

Art Classes/pottery – I only added this one because I think its great to get kids involved in the arts. However, my children have no real interest in painting. We have tried on several occasions to attempt painting pottery classes. More for the older age group. We have a great studio in the next town over which is not to far of a drive from. Perfect for getting out of the hot sun or nasty rain.

Head to a bounce house play spot -  a few of these just popped up around us and we headed to one for a birthday party recently. Admission was free since we were attending a party, but usually costs around $5 to $6 a person for a small independent place and up around $10 a person for a larger one like Pump It Up or Bounce U. These are perfect to get your kids in and just bounce their hearts out!!! The party we attended was great! My 3 year old had a blast and didn’t want to leave. This is on our must do list this summer.

Another great activity is a Cooking Class. There are so many companies to choose from but one that has been tried and tested and approved is Kids Cooking Company. An innovative concept in children’s cooking classes developed to inspire, excite
and feed the curiosity of your growing gourmet. Growing gourmets will have the opportunity to cook and have fun in the kitchen.
They will be introduced to cooking vocabulary and techniques, tools and utensils, basics of etiquette, nutrition, safety, kitchen math and new foods! (Kids Cooking Company)

Aside from the usual playground which is pretty worn out in our house, these make great alternatives and while some are pricey others are very budget friendly. Libraries always hold story time and usually no charge. Some libraries may even have theme family nights for a very small fee. Pottery Barn Kids hosts Story and Craft times on certain days for free as well. We are always on the hunt for new and exciting things to do. While these are just a few things to do, they are different and can add some excitement to your summer.

Travel Time Tuesday

Summer is coming and it’s time to start thinking about vacation destinations. Whether it’s a short getaway or a long vacation, there are so many choices to choose from. But, where are the best family friendly destinations and what places will keep your toddler occupied.

My family loves to travel and we have been fortunate to have been able to travel to several locals in the past several years that cater to our children. I also have a background in travel management and has studied the best places to visit.

While Walt Disney World is on top of many lists, ours as well, but there are many other wonderful places that fit any personality and any budget. There are so many places, that I am going to feature one place each week, kind of like a Travel Tuesday.

I am tempted to start with Walt Disney World in Florida, but I thought I would start in a different direction. Everyone is budget conscience and saving money is always a given, so what better way then a close to home destination.

Sea World Adventure Parks

I understand not everyone lives in driving distance of a Sea World Adventure Park, but if you happen to, these make wonderful trips for your young family, toddlers included. Sea World has 3 theme parks located in San Diego, California, San Antonio, TX, and Orlando, Florida. We have been lucky enough to have visited all 3 parks, but I am going to highlight our most recent trip to San Antonio, TX. All 3 theme parks have the same basic layout, themes, and rides. However, each park has its own unique spin on the aquatic world.

We recently took the 4 hour drive down to San Antonio to spend a fun filled weekend with our boys. Sea World does not have any onsite hotels, but has many family friendly hotels near by. My recommendation is the Wild Oak Ranch at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country. Absolutely perfect for families. Full service kitchens and separate bedrooms and a huge water playground. A destination in itself. If you go in off season, you can score a super low price, around $149 a night. That’s a steal for what you are getting.

On to Sea World. There are many things to do and see at Sea World. But, for traveling with toddlers, there are some main points that are a must see and do. Feeding the dolphins was the highlight of the trip. You can purchase small trays of fish food, small, nasty, little, fish, to feed the dolphins. My boys could not get enough. The dolphins would swim right up to you where you can actually touch and feel the dolphins. Wonderful memories and awesome pictures. We spent a very long time here. Sea Lion feeding was just as great, a little scary that the sea lions can jump up so high and the wall is really high up making it hard and scary for infants and toddlers to lean over. But, none the less, a wonderful thing to do. Check the map for the animal encounters and feeding times, there were the highlights of the trip and they loved every second of it.

Sea World San Antonio has a wonderful toddler play area, Shamu’s Happy Harbor, in the middle of the park. Complete with a splash park, pint sized coaster, and mini carnival rides. The water splash park could be a bit bigger, but was still fun. Got a little crowded with older children playing. There are lots of shows at Sea World, but good luck getting a 2 year old to sit through it. We didn’t even attempt them, knowing that our boys would not sit through it. But, we have watched them and they are great. There is a small “park” area near the Steel Eel Roller coaster, complete with benches, flowers, and lots of space. Set next to the lake and makes a perfect break time area.

Check the park listings for special events. They are host to Big Birds Birthday Bash and Breakfast with Elmo. A MUST see for little fans.

Sea World is a perfect close to home getaway for those only looking to spend a few days away and not spend a ton of money. They always have discount coupons and specials for those looking for deals. Lots of great things for toddlers and infants to do and there are not many places that offer that.

Safe and Happy Travels,

Toni

Travel Talk: What is the best winter destination for a family vacation?

snwmn31

Q: What is the best winter destination for a family vacation?

A: Well this depends on what you like best – the tropics or the mountains.
Many ski resorts offer great family packages throughout the US and check out
the winter festivals also. For the tropics, a short flight to the Bahamas
might cure the winter blues too! Make sure to schedule winter travel
before the Thanksgiving holidays or after the New Year for the best values
and packages!
